Measure Energy Phase 

A project phase that establishes a “Measured EUI”, which is based on annual or monthly measured data.  It provides the ability to compare measured data to design data. The Measured EUI can be compared to the Predicted EUI for the same project and/or others to promote a design feedback loop.

You can’t setup a measured energy phase.  A measured energy phase is automatically setup once a project has submitted (not just setup) a Design Closeout Final phase.  On PORTFOLIO, an icon (blue circle with a white M in the middle) will be displayed in the “Stage column” for the design closeout final project row.  Selecting the icon takes you to the Measured Energy Phase input screen.  To open the design closeout final phase just select on the project name in the column to the right. 

Section 1 is not editable and displays the values from the design closeout final phase for context. 

Section 2 is where the measured energy use for the project is input.  There are three data types available, which are described in more detail later:


Selecting a data type, and entering a month and year initially populate the table for each data type that is displayed on the Measured Energy Use Data dialog, which is displayed when the “Measured Data” button is selected.

Once the measured energy data has been entered for a project, the following occurs:
 

  • Section 3 –the Measured EUI (kBtu/sf/yr) is displayed, as well as the most current period for the measured energy use that is associated with the project.
  • Project Metrics – the M-Savings (Measured Energy Savings) percentage related to the baseline EUI is calculated and displayed
  • Portfolio – the Measured EUI will be displayed in the design closeout final project row


 

Data Type: Annual Measured EUI

Selecting the data type changes the button to “Annual Measured Data”.  Enter values for the month and year to set the start date for the measured energy use timeline. 

Annual Measured Data button – displays a simple table comprised of columns for Start Month, Start Year and Annual Measured EUI.  The Start month and year will display the selections from the previous screen.  The Annual Measured EUI can be entered directly. 

To add another year, select the “+” icon, and enter the Annual Measured EUI for that period. 

To delete a year, select the “x” icon. 

When Save is selected, the most current year (by time) will be the Measured EUI value displayed on the inputs screen.


Data Type: Annual Fuel Source

When to use:  When you have the annual fuel source usage for the project. 

Like the other data types, the start month and year will be displayed in the Measured Energy Use Data table.  Initially one row is displayed, which contains cells to enter annual values (kBtu) for four fuel sources (Electricity, Natural Gas, District and other) and two renewable types (On-site and Off-site).  After values are entered, the kBtu total for the project is calculated, as well as the Measured EUI (MEUI). 

The checkbox to the right of the MEUI column provides the ability to override the calculated value and enter your own MEUI.

Another period can be added by selecting the “+” icon, and the start month will default to the same value above, and the start year will default to the next sequential year.

A period can be deleted by selecting the “x” icon.  Once deleted, it cannot be retrieved.

Fuel Sources (kBtu):

  • Electricity
  • Natural Gas
  • District – if the fuel source is associated with a central plant or something similar
  • Other – if none of the previous fuel sources match those utilized on the project, enter the fuel source usage here.
  • On-Site Renewables – if energy is being harvested for the project using an on-site PV array, wind turbine or other.  The on-site renewable energy usage value will be subtracted from the sum of the previous fuel sources, which will lower the MEUI for the project.
  • Off-Site Renewables – if energy is being provided to the project from an off-site renewable source, such as a PV array, wind turbine or other.  The AIA 2030 Commitment focuses on on-site energy use, so off-site renewable harvesting can be included with the project, but it does not factor into the MEUI calculation for the project.  However, it is important to learn more about the number of projects utilizing off-site renewable sources, which will influence how off-site renewables are handled by the AIA 2030 Commitment program moving forward.


When Save is selected, the most current year (by time) will be the Measured EUI value displayed on the inputs screen.
 


Data Type: Monthly Fuel Source
 

When to use:  When you have monthly fuel source usage for the project. z

 

When the Measured Energy Use Data dialog opens a table with rows for twelve months is displayed.  The first row contains the start month and year entered on the inputs screen, and the rows below enter the sequential month and year for the twelve-month period.   Each row contains columns for potentially six fuel sources that can be associated with the project.  After values are entered for a month, the kBtu total for the month is summed in the Totals column.z

 

Annual Measured EUI is displayed above the table.  The MEUI is calculated based on the most current twelve months associated with the project.

Another period can be added by selecting the “+” icon, and the start month will default to the same value above, and the start year will default to the next sequential year.

A period can be deleted by selecting the “x” icon.  Once deleted, it cannot be retrieved, and the month sequential order will need to be updated.

How to enter data:  Monthly energy usage values can be entered directly or by importing values.


Import
Selecting the import button takes you to an import screen that is like the batch import process.  The main steps include:
Step 1:  Select an XLS file.  Include any notes you would like to have associated with the import activity.

Step 2:  Select “Validate Data” to run data integrity checks on the XLS file

Step 3:  Review the “Measured Energy Use Validation Report”, and make updates to the XLS file, if needed (return to step 1)

Step 4:  Select “Import Data” to import the monthly energy use values.  Include any notes you would like to have associated with the import activity.

Step 5:  Energy use data has been imported, and:

  • The import activity is logged and displayed on the Monthly Measured Energy Use Import Log
  • The MEUI is calculated for the most current twelve months that has been imported, and is displayed on the Inputs screen, section 3: MEASURED
  • The M-SAVINGS percentage is calculated compared to the Baseline EUI, and is displayed on the top-right of the Inputs screen.
